St. John the Baptist
This icon is a copy of Russian icons of the 16th century. It was painted by me in 2002. The icon will emphasize extreme asceticism of a saint. Asceticism in the Christian medieval tradition was one of the ways to reach God. This is explained by the huge amount of monasteries in this period and the importance of fasting.
Board, gold, egg tempera, 25 x 16 cm.

I understand, that from point of view of today's art school, this looks incorrect, but for Byzantine orthodox artists, I think this was normal. Take look on two examples, which I've attached into description. One of them medival Byzantine ikon, the over - one also medival but Russian ikon.

According to the Orthodox Julian calendar, we are on the threshold of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ.
